HAROLD JAMES PERKIN

11 November 1926 - 16 October 2004

HAROLD PERKIN, the founder of the Social History Society, died on 16 October after a relatively short illness, surrounded by his loving family. To the end, his work, and his fellow historians - especially members of the Social History Society - mattered to him enormously.

The Society will miss Harold very much both as a Historian and as a friend, and we are beginning to make plans to ensure his memory stays associated with the Society. One plan we are working on is for a Festschrift volume and conference - the conference to be held in London next summer, to enable as many people as possible who would like to come to make plans to do so. Further details will appear on the website shortly. In addition, we are setting up a Memorial Fund for Harold, which would be used to fund student bursaries (including conference attendance), which seems particularly appropriate given the importance Harold himself gave to the helping of new talent in the profession. We believe he would heartily approve such a use of funds contributed in his memory.

Obituaries for Harold that are still available on-line include Elizabeth Gibson's in The Daily Northwestern, and David Cannadine's in The Guardian.
